I missed you. Have the nurses been alright?
no subject
They're alright. They bring tea for my throat. I hurt it when I was-
[Screaming. But Nill definitely doesn't need to hear that. Unfortunately, he blanks completely when he tries to think of a lie. His brain, usually so quick Nill finds it hard to keep up with, is sluggish and confused at the moment. All he can do is stare blankly, and hope she changes the subject.]
no subject
Is the tea here alright?
[She couldn't really taste it when she was in the hospital... either that or it didn't taste like anything. She couldn't tell at the time.]

[He's a little distracted now, still trying to push down those memories. He's not ready to deal with them yet. He needs to pretend for a little while longer that none of it actually happened.
He's so distracted that he doesn't notice the nurse at all, or even get a kick out of ruffling Nill's feathers the way he normally would. He tries to reach for Nill, just for something steady and soothing to hold onto, but he can't. His fingers twitch a little, but his arm doesn't move at all. And even that little twitch hurts. He gasps softly, and hopes his eyes aren't shimmering the way it feels like they are.]
Maybe you can bring me one from work some time. Those ones are good, too.

[Her expression falls the slightest bit as she watches him, though. She should have prevented this. She should have kept him safe, not let this happen-- he was never, ever supposed to be dragged into this side of the world, and now he'd never get out. Nill just kept failing to protect him.
She pauses, just for a moment, before reaching out and very carefully putting her hand over his. She doesn't want to hurt him, but well... she had the chance to do the reaching this time.]

[The smile sticks when Nill touches his hand. Goofy and doped up and a little pained, but mostly just thankful to have her there. Safe and sound and within theoretical reach, if he could just get his body to cooperate again.]
[She's never been the one to close the distance before. Even if it happens to be in response to an unusually pathetic display even by his standards, it still counts. She's still right here for him, just when he needs her. It's more than he can express, so he just pushes the feeling in her direction. Like his ribs are full of thick, warm fluid. Like a lung cavity of aching, wonderful mucus or something. Like if he took a deep breath he'd just burst and spill guys everywhere. Except that he can't, that's what the oxygen tubes are for. But anyway, it's a good feeling. The best feeling. ]
no subject
Is that a good idea?
[Though... her cheeks go just a little bit redder, and she closes her eyes for a moment. She should be worried about this - but mostly, it just strikes her how nice a feeling it is, and how good it makes her feel. Like maybe there's something decent left in the world, tucked away in Yosuke's chest. If Nill were less composed, it would probably make her cry. It's just that nice.
She has to keep herself from letting her eyes water up when she realizes that her senpai never once felt anything even slightly like this when she was around.]
...thank you.

[His thoughts are too hazy to make sense of. His brain might as well be full of cotton batting and pudding, because that's exactly how it feels. But he knows that he's never had that feeling to share with anyone until he met Nill. Something sort of like it for Souji, and Shika. But not the same. Not as big and bursty. Everything hurts right now, even through the morphine haze. His whole body is screaming, except for that part. Whatever lives in his middle and swells up at seeing Nill feels as good as ever. She's better than the drugs...except he probably shouldn't tell her that. He hopes he didn't just tell her that.]
Is it okay if we dim the lights? There's a lamp...my head kind of...I must have bumped it.
no subject
It almost feels the way that laughter feels in her chest. It's the only thing that Nill knows to compare it to, because she herself has never had a feeling like that before. She thinks it's a little different from before, too, but she's not sure how. Maybe it's the drugs.
She almost smiles though. Hah. If only she were better than drugs.]
Sure.
[...She seems reluctant to let go of his hand, but she does after a moment to try to figure out the lighting in here. She stands, goes over to the lamp, and turns that on. The overhead lights... Ah, there was a switch up there. She reaches above the bed to flick that off.]
Do you want the lamp moved at all?
no subject
[It's definitely a bit better. Though that has the unwanted effect of making him feel drowsy. Damn it, what if he accidentally falls asleep and Nill leaves? Or worse, what if she stays and he wakes up screaming like he did earlier? No, he definitely needs to stay awake. He's not going to let her waste a trip out here just to pass out on her anyway.]
Shika said Souji's okay. And you're both okay. How's everyone else who got involved? I couldn't reach Gil-San. He's usually...there. You know?
no subject
I know. I think he's fine, though. There were a few healers there, and no one died.
[None of them did, anyway.]
...I can try to make sure you have good dreams, if you'd like me to.
no subject
[Except the word for Yosuke's current condition escapes him, at the moment. He blinks, then rolls his eyes self-deprecatingly. Ow. Since when does rolling his eyes hurt? It makes him lightheaded too, and he has to close his eyes altogether for a moment to get the swaying feeling to stop.]
[He knows the part that Nill is leaving out, since he's already spoken to Shika. But just for now, it's easier to leave it at that and pretend its true. Nobody died, everything's fine. He'll heal up quickly and life will be exactly the same as before.]
If it's okay, can you ring the nurse? There's some lozenges over there, but I can't...uh. They're out of my reach, you know? They check on me a lot anyway, but there's a button by my hip. See it?
no subject
[The offer still stands though. Nill frowns slightly, and looks down at the button. She remembers it from when she was here, but..]
If you just need a lozenge, can't I get it?
no subject
[The morphine pump hisses quietly, and the sense of relief it brings is quick. It takes all the shap pains down to a dull ache, and makes the unbearable ones a bit softer. Blunt stabbing now, maybe. Only really bad if he tries to move. His eyes droop a little, his jaw goes kind of slack, and he'll kick his own ass if he starts drooling, damn it. But...that's a lot better. ]
Cherry? Saving the licorice for last resort.
no subject
Is licorice that bad?
[After a moment though Nill spots the bag of lozenges and picks it up, fishing around inside it to find a cherry one. While unwrapping it;] Are you sure you don't want to get some sleep instead?
no subject
[No need to answer that last one, right? Don't make him sleep yet...]
no subject
[Right? ...honestly she doesn't know too much about nutrition. And she's less worried about him not resting enough, and more him falling asleep and choking on the lozenge. But she lifts it and gestures for him to open his mouth so she can drop it in.]
no subject
[Its an odd shy moment for him, when he opens his mouth for Nill to put the lozenge in. If Gilbert were feeding him something, he'd just hope the guy's hands were clean. But from Nill, the gesture seems sweet and oddly intimate. He glances out the window.]
no subject
kgjdhjh don't be shy about this, geeze. It doesn't occur to her that it should be strange to help with this until he makes it seem strange, and then her cheeks go red again. She pops the lozenge into his mouth, and immediately pulls her hand back, looking away and pretending to check the time.]
no subject
[If neither of them acknowledges the awkwardness it'll totally go away in a second, right?]

Nill jumps up, hovering over him for a second and looking extremely panicked before she grabs the nurse call button off the bed and frantically starts pressing the button. God, why doesn't she have a voice, if she could just scream for them to come it'd be okay--]
